Building Responsibility Through Hygiene Week

My service-learning experience was a significant journey that took me beyond the classroom and into the daily lives of learners. We organized and managed a Hygiene Week, emphasizing the significance of personal hygiene and maintaining a healthy school environment. This experience showed me that teaching is not limited to textbooks or classes; it can also be integrated into learners' everyday routines and choices.

Throughout the week, learners were urged to arrive at school clean and tidy, while also taking responsibility for keeping their classrooms and school grounds clean. It was amazing to watch how delighted they were when their efforts were rewarded, whether they were wearing neatly shined shoes or sweeping their classroom corners. These simple deeds instilled a feeling of pride and ownership in the students, demonstrating that hygiene is both a personal and community obligation.

One of the most impactful parts of the week was working with the Grade 7 girls. We demonstrated how to properly use sanitary pads and discussed the importance of menstrual hygiene. For many of these learners, it was the first time someone had spoken so openly and honestly about this topic. Their questions and eagerness to learn revealed how necessary such conversations are in schools. It reminded me that as a teacher, I will not only be responsible for teaching academics but also for preparing learners for life, empowering them with knowledge and confidence.

This project reinforced my belief in the importance of service-learning. It gave me the chance to model responsibility, teamwork, and care. I also learned how to collaborate with others, plan effectively, and adapt activities to suit the needs of different learners. Most importantly, it showed me that when we create space for learners to be active participants, they take ownership of their learning and growth.

Hygiene Week may have lasted only a few days, but its impact will remain with me as a future teacher. It has strengthened my commitment to teaching with empathy, responsibility, and care qualities that go beyond the curriculum.
